Why is there a socket on the cooker switch plate ?

When you have a cooker plate with a single socket on it, its usually used to provide power for an electric cooker or oven via the switch and also use the socket for an appliance such as an extractor hood.

The socket is usually rated at 13A and the switch at 45A depending on the size of the cooker circuit.
