The reason behind needing deeper back boxes is to allow the fittings to be installed correctly and safely. Due to certain modules such as dimmers, which have larger backs on them, you need room to dress the cables correctly in the rear of the box and then wire into the dimmer modules without trapping any cables causing electrical issues to occur.
